About this plant

This compact, evergreen shrub has a dense, spreading habit, making it perfect for borders, hedges, or containers. It thrives in zones 7-9 and is hardy to temperatures as low as 10°F. Its small, glossy, dark green leaves provide year-round interest, while clusters of highly fragrant, tiny white flowers bloom in late winter to early spring. These flowers are followed by shiny black berries that add ornamental interest. It does not offer notable fall color but remains an elegant addition to shaded or partially shaded gardens. Best grown in moist, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter, it can reach a mature height of 3-5 feet and a similar spread. This shrub is deer-resistant, making it an excellent choice for areas with wildlife concerns. Ideal for woodland garden settings or as a foundation plant.
