About this plant
This deciduous shrub, grown in a unique tree form, features a broad, spreading habit with elegantly tiered, horizontal branches creating a striking layered appearance. Hardy to USDA Zones 4-7, it thrives in full sun to partial shade and tolerates average to well-drained soils, including alkaline types. In fall, the small, ovate green leaves transform into stunning hues of red, orange, and purple, adding seasonal interest. Clusters of tiny pink or white flowers appear in late spring, followed by bright red berries in autumn that persist through winter, providing food for birds. Its compact size reaches a mature height of 3-5 feet and a spread of 5-8 feet. Deer-resistant and low-maintenance, it works well as a specimen plant or in mixed borders, thriving in urban and suburban settings alike.
