Camellia jap. 'Tom Knudsen' (red)

This evergreen shrub features a compact, upright habit, showcasing stunning deep red blooms that appear in late winter to early spring, making it a showstopper in any garden. Recommended for USDA hardiness zones 7–9, it thrives in mild temperatures, preferring partial shade to avoid leaf scorch. Its glossy, dark green foliage provides year-round interest and pairs beautifully with its dramatic flowers. Fall color is not applicable for this variety, but its blooms offer a vibrant splash during the cooler months. It requires acidic, well-drained soil enriched with organic matter and performs best with regular watering to maintain moisture. Mature height reaches about 6 to 8 feet, making it ideal for hedges, borders, or specimen planting. Deer resistance is moderate, as deer may occasionally nibble on the foliage. This stunning camellia provides elegance and charm to gardens while demanding surprisingly low maintenance.
