Camellia jap. 'Colonel Firey' (red)

This stunning evergreen shrub displays a compact, upright habit, with glossy, dark-green foliage that provides year-round interest. Hardy in zones 7 through 9, it thrives in temperatures ranging from 10°F to 50°F, making it an excellent choice for mild climates. The vibrant, fiery red flowers bloom from late fall to early spring, bringing color to the garden when most plants are dormant. It prefers well-drained, acidic soils enriched with organic material and performs best in partial shade to avoid direct afternoon sun. Mature plants typically reach a height of 6 to 8 feet with a spread of 4 to 6 feet. Deer-resistant and versatile, this shrub serves as a striking centerpiece, foundation plant, or hedging option. No fall color change is notable due to its evergreen nature, but its flowers and glossy leaves ensure year-round beauty.
