Aucuba jap. 'Variegata'

A compact, evergreen shrub with a bushy, rounded habit, it is prized for its glossy, green leaves generously splashed with bright golden-yellow variegation. This plant thrives in USDA hardiness zones 7 to 10, preferring mild climates with recommended temperatures ranging from 10°F to 40°F. It tolerates partial to deep shade and performs well in moist, well-drained soils, making it a versatile choice for gardens with challenging low-light areas. Inconspicuous flowers may appear in spring, giving way to ornamental red berries if a male plant is nearby for pollination. It does not exhibit significant fall color changes but maintains year-round interest with its vibrant foliage. Mature plants reach a height of 4-6 feet and similar spread, offering a medium-sized screening or foundation planting option. This species demonstrates moderate deer resistance, making it a low-maintenance addition to landscapes prone to wildlife browsing.
